The History of the Burton Joyce Players
The first meeting of the Burton Joyce Players took place in December 1926, when the remit of the group was stated as: "to benefit charities, preferably local, and for the encouragement of local talent and social intercourse". The first production was a musical play ' The Geisha (the story of a Tea house). Two productions a year followed, with a bias towards musical plays and operettas, until 1935 when there appears to have been a break until 1950, although the History Society Archives do mention a production of 'Pride and Prejudice' in 1945.
From 1950 onwards, the Society has staged three productions a year, and from 1967 one of these has been a pantomime. We try to give our audiences a good range of drama, with lots of comedy, murder mysteries, musical revues and occasionally something a bit different, like the world premieres of ‘Independent Street' and 'Eckersley Rising', both written by local authors.
